The webinar is intended to provide an outreach to ASEAN Member States (AMS) on the latest development of the Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, in particular the 30x30 Initiative. While the number to the membership to the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) is increasing (more than 60 countries has signed up), there is a lack of commitment within ASEAN, with only Cambodia expressing an official interest to be a member. Many of the members are still having a wait-and-see attitude. There are still lingering questions/uncertainties as to the value of being in the HAC. As CBD will convene its Subsidiary Body on Science, Technical & Technological Advice (SBSTTA) event around this time, this webinar would provide added value to government officials involved in COP15 negotiations. Such questions include their sovereignty i.e. whether the target is global, regional, or national; whether science is sound enough to support the contention of conserving at least 30% of the Earth’s surface by 2030 would ensure that biodiversity loss is halted by then, and whether such an initiative would ensure the region’s socio-economic development is not compromised.
